The 1987 Topps Barry Bonds PSA 10 trading at over 300x raw and nearly 20x PSA 9 is the most extreme spread on the board, signaling that a clean 10 is a fundamentally different asset than anything below it. The 1985 Topps Mark McGwire is even more dramatic in absolute dollar terms, with a PSA 10 commanding 436x raw and 26x PSA 9 at $5,241. These are not linear grade ladders. They are cliff edges.

By contrast, the 2018 Bowman Shohei Ohtani shows a far tighter compression: PSA 10 at just over 6x raw and 4.5x PSA 9. That reflects the modern era reality where raw copies are already in strong condition and population counts are far higher. The spread is honest, not exploitable.

The 1980 Topps Rickey Henderson PSA 9 at $3,200 with no PSA 10 comp recorded this period is the most intriguing data point. The absence of a 10 sale is itself signal. Either copies are not coming to market or buyers are waiting. Either way, the PSA 9 is absorbing demand that would otherwise flow to a 10, and at $3,200 it is doing so aggressively.

Three closes stand out this period. The 1968 Topps Venezuela Nolan Ryan Rookie at $127,000 in PSA 4.5 condition is remarkable not because of the grade but because of the provenance. Venezuela regional issues are genuinely scarce and command a premium that standard grading scales do not fully capture. The market confirmed that premium emphatically.

The 1933 Goudey Babe Ruth at $80,000 raw is a reminder that pre-war paper in strong visual condition does not need a slab to find serious buyers. A GAI NM grade on a 90-year-old card carries weight when the card presents correctly.

The dual $31,500 closes on the 1948 Leaf Jackie Robinson PSA 4 are notable for their consistency. Two copies clearing at the same price in the same window is as clean a comp as the market produces.

On the live deal side, the Hank Aaron 2000 Topps Magic Moments card scored at 100 against a $158.75 baseline asking $3.30 is the standout Grand Slam on the board. It is a niche insert but the discount to comp is not close. The 1964 Giants Topps Team card featuring Willie Mays and Willie McCovey at $4.99 against an $11 baseline is the kind of vintage value that disappears quickly.

Nolan Ryan leads volume-weighted revenue this period at $231,234 across 607 sales, driven almost entirely by the Venezuela rookie close. Hank Aaron is close behind at $204,110 across 637 sales, a more distributed result suggesting genuine broad demand rather than one headline transaction.

Vintage dominates era activity at 11,781 sales, nearly twice the combined total of all other eras. Junk-wax holds steady at 3,543 sales, a category that continues to punch above its perceived cultural weight thanks to grade-sensitive premium dynamics on key rookies. Ultra-modern at 2,408 sales is active. The pre-war market at 6 sales is thin by count but explosive by dollar when it does transact.

Movers and Records

PSA 10 prices were largely unchanged period over period. The 1987 Topps Barry Bonds nudged up 0.44% to $908, a small move that nonetheless keeps it trending in the right direction. Bo Jackson, Ohtani, and McGwire PSA 10s held flat. Stability at elevated price levels on McGwire in particular is notable given the steroid-era narrative headwinds that card has historically faced.
